Homemade (Crock Pot) Apple Butter

Growing up, my dad LOVED apple butter, but I never really had the taste for it because it was TOO sweet. So I never made it or enjoyed it…that is, until a MOPs meeting a few years ago. One of the moms shared a recipe for homemade apple butter that contained less sugar than the store bought versions. I made it and enjoyed it but thought it was still too sweet. So, the next year when I made my own homemade crockpot applesauce, I decided to make it with NO SUGAR!

IT WAS A HIT!!  When I gifted it to people, they commented that it was the best apple butter they had ever tasted and wanted to know my secret. When I explained that I didn’t add any sugar, they were shocked by how delicious it was without the additives.

We love putting it on homemade bread or dinner rolls.

So, if you’re looking for a SIMPLE recipe for homemade apple butter that is SUGAR FREE, you’ve found it!!

2 tsp ground cinnamon
½ tsp allspice
½ tsp cloves
1 spices

Directions
1) For each 7 cups of applesauce, add 2 tsp of cinnamon, ½ tsp of allspice, and ½ tsp of cloves.

2) Mix well!

3) If you want your apple butter to be thicker, cook in a crockpot on HIGH for 3 hours. Crack the lid to let steam escape. (**Personal note: I skip this step when I use my homemade apple sauce. However, if you are using store-bought applesauce, I recommend doing this.**)
4) Scoop your apple butter into jars while it is still hot, leaving ½ inch headspace. Remove bubbles.

5) Wipe the rims and cover with boiled lid.

6) Add ring and screw it on tightly.
