Clean & Easy Sloppy Joes

Who doesn’t love Sloppy Joes? Am I right? But who likes all the “stuff” they add to the canned mix?

Well, here’s an easy recipe for clean Sloppy Joes that will have your family asking for more! Just put it in the crock pot and forget about it!

Sloppy Joes

Servings: 8
Serving size: 2/3 cup (1 red container)
Container Count: ½ green, ½ purple, 1 red, (bun = 1 yellow)
Ingredients:

  • 2 C (1 pound) ground turkey or lean ground beef, cooked
  • 4 C tomato sauce
  • 4 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 2 onions, diced fine
  • 1 tbsp. minced garlic
  • 1 tbsp. mustard
  • 1 tbsp. onion powder
  • 1 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp. Italian seasoning
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • (Whole-wheat deli flats or bread)

Directions:

  1. In a large skillet on medium-high heat, brown the ground turkey or beef.  Once browned, drain any excess fat. Brown diced onion. (I did this as part of my monthly meal planning…for more info, click here .)
  2. Put the cooked ground turkey/beef into the slow cooker.

  3. In a measuring cup or mixing bowl, combine all of the other ingredients. Combine this well so everything is thoroughly mixed.

  4. Pour the sauce over the ground beef in the slow cooker and stir it to coat everything.

  5. Set the slow cooker to cook for 5 hours on LOW.  Once finished, stir the meat and sauce again.
