Homemade Crockpot Yogurt

If you’re family is like my family, you LOVE yogurt. But if you’re like me, you HATE paying the price for it! Well, after some research, some failed attempts, and many successes, I’m ready to share my recipe for homemade yogurt in the crock pot. It’s SUPER easy and very yummy plain, but you can always add your own flavorings to it, such as cinnamon, honey, vanilla, fruit, etc. You can also make this into FROZEN YOGURT…but that recipe will come later 😉

NOTE: Be sure to use a crockpot that has a removable pot and lid. See pics for details.

Here it is:

Ingredients
1 gallon milk (any type will do – skim, low fat, whole)
1 yogurt (6 oz) (plain Greek yogurt)

ingredients

Directions
1.Dump milk into crockpot. Put on HIGH for 3-4 hours or until 185* (mine is 4.5 hours)

When there is about 1-2 hours left, take your starter yogurt out of the fridge and set on the counter to get to room temperature so you don’t curdle it when you add it to the milk.

  1. Turn off crock pot and let it cool to 110-119* – or put in ice bath. If you use an ice bath, be sure to stir it regularly to help avoid a film developing on top.
  2. Take out 1-2 cups of warm milk. Stir in yogurt.
  3. Mix milk/yogurt back into crockpot and stir thoroughly.
  4. Wrap pot with think towel and let sit 8-12 hours. (The longer it sits the tangier it will taste)
  5. Unwrap the crockpot and put it in the fridge to cool – DON’T STIR
    in-fridge
  6. Stir well. Put into smaller containers. Keep 6 oz separate for next starter. (You will need new starter after 5 generations. I use a sticky note on my fridge to help me keep track.)
  7. If you want to add flavoring, you can add it into the smaller containers or individual servings. Enjoy!
