Homemade Honey Wheat Bread

Bread…can’t live without it, right? My family LOVES bread, but I hated buying it and not REALLY knowing what’s in it. Like, how much sugar and salt did they put in it? What other preservatives and artificial flavorings/colors did they sneak into it?

I mentioned to my husband that I would love to make our own bread but I would need either a breadmaker or a Kitchenaid Mixer in order to do it efficiently. He promised to look into it. A while later, I mentioned it to a friend from church, who said, “I have a breadmaker that I’ve used 3 times. It’s sat in my pantry for YEARS. I’ve offered it to both of my daughters-in-law and neither wanted it. Do you want it?” To which I replied, “YES!” And then her husband carried it to my car!  So, we have been blessed with a breadmaker since 2014 and use it VERY regularly.

When I started eating “clean” (or at least cleaner) in the fall of 2016, a friend gave me her recipe for CLEAN honey wheat bread. I have modified it a bit, but we LOVE it and I hope you do too! Awesome toppings that we LOVE are Homemade Blackberry Jam or Homemade (Crock Pot) Apple Butter

NOTE: You can always set your breadmaker to bake the bread. I choose to roll out the dough and bake it myself because I think it’s fluffier that way and it doesn’t have a hole in it from the kneading paddle.

You can bake the bread in the breadmaker instead of making just the dough. I prefer to bake mine in the oven because I think it’s less dense and so it won’t have a hole in the bottom where the kneading paddle is located.

  • 1 1/3 cup water
  • 1 ½ tablespoon butter, softened
  • 1 ½ tablespoon honey
  • 3 Cups whole wheat flour
